Interreg NWE's Fibersort project Federation Fibersort Co Nsortium released a report entitled "industry vision - recycling of post consumer textiles". The report points out that although more and more brands are starting to use recyclable raw materials to make products, they are still looking for terminal markets that can protect the prices of textile materials after consumption.

The report estimates that northwest Europe produces about 4 million 700 thousand tons of textile waste every year, but less than 1% of these wastes will be recycled. Nearly half of the waste will be disposed of by burning or burying.

The author of the report pointed out that the service life of textiles was shortened due to the increasing consumption of the public (a data showed that Holland bought 40 clothes per person per annum) and the improper disposal of post consumer textiles.

The main problems facing the post consumer textile recycling market lie in:

The technology of separating different fibers from clothing is not yet mature, and the incentive mechanism of textile recycling technology is not perfect: at present, about 60% of recyclers still use mechanical technology to deal with clothing, and the price of textile materials and raw materials processed by mechanical technology is far from the price.
The lack of traceability of recycled textile materials has led to little market demand: due to the lack of traceability, recycled textiles may contain high levels of chemicals, threatening people's health.

Despite the difficulties, the report believes that the use of recycled textile materials remains to be explored. In order to solve the above problems and find more problems in the textile recycling market after consumption, some new R & D and pilot tests have yet to be carried out.
